Module 3

Students:    High school

Time:          50 Minutes

Materials: Computer, screen, Power Point Presentation, handouts, pens/pencils, poster paper, markers.

G8 Goals:   Students will stay in character, develop relationships with students from other schools/cities, become more comfortable with each other, share their ideas with each other

Language Objective(s): speaking, listening, reading, writing, building critical thinking skills

Building Language Awareness:  Reinforce to students that they will be expected to speak English during the summit, and that the event will integrate multiple skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing).  Model appropriate behavior for students by speaking English during summit.

Now you are going to watch video and you should answer the questions in your Module 3 paper.

1.     What is UNESCO?


2.     When was it founded and why?


3.     What is UNESCO  mission?

After video watching ask some volonteers from groups to answer the questions.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is an agency within the United Nations that is responsible for promoting peace, social justice, human rights and international security through international cooperation on educational, science and cultural programs. It is based in Paris, France and has over 50 field offices located around the world.
Today, UNESCO has five major themes to its programs which include 1) education, 2) natural sciences, 3) social and human sciences, 4) culture, and 5) communication and information. UNESCO is also actively working to achieve the United Nations'Millennium Development Goals but it is focused on achieving the goals of significantly reducing extreme poverty in developing countries by 2015, developing a program for universal primary education in all countries by 2015, eliminating gender inequalities in primary and secondary education, promoting sustainable development and reducing the loss of environmental resources.
UNESCO's World Heritage mission is to:
·                   encourage countries to sign the World Heritage Convention and to ensure the protection of their natural and cultural heritage;
·                   encourage States Parties to the Convention to nominate sites within their national territory for inclusion on the World Heritage List;
·                   encourage States Parties to establish management plans and set up reporting systems on the state of conservation of their World Heritage sites;
·                   help States Parties safeguard World Heritage properties by providing technical assistance and professional training;
·                   provide emergency assistance for World Heritage sites in immediate danger;
·                   support States Parties' public awareness-building activities for World Heritage conservation;
·                   encourage participation of the local population in the preservation of their cultural and natural heritage;
·                   encourage international cooperation in the conservation of our world's cultural and natural heritage.

Each groups will study different parts of convention and you should make a poster describing the main goals of the part. You should write the number of the Convention part and present in class and then at the end of the forum.

You will give parts of Convention to the groups. 15-20 min
